The Descent
The portfolio is the art piece.
The surface — SPEC-00-2 // MAW, observed. Information and energy torrenting inward.

The Concept
What is it?
The Descent comes from my love of visual art and story telling through movement. My inspiration comes from the concept of observation; watching a singular entity exist, from a removed perspective.
This piece is a digital representation of how my mind feels. A constant inflow of information, a requirement for near-constant stimuli. Traveling inside, you find a being that is simply happy to exist, thoughts identified as they pulse through the structure.
I had a lot of fun working on this project.
The Two Worlds
Exterior → breach → interior
The site is two worlds separated by an event horizon.
The exterior is a warm-gold spiral galaxy, viewed from outside, slowly consuming particles. As you scroll you fall toward the hole — the galaxy is a fixed background that zooms, sections emerge from the dark, the field darkens with depth, and a live depth readout climbs in the instrument frame. Scrolling is observing; falling toward from the outside.
The breach is the threshold. Hold the center of the maw for five seconds and a gold rim-arc charges; the infall halts and particles gather into a hot ring at the accretion edge. At full charge the dam breaks and you’re drawn through the event horizon. Holding is crossing through — a different verb than scrolling, and a different depth.
The breach — STATE · COUPLING. Holding winds the maw up; the disk gathers into a hot ring at the edge before it plunges through.
The interior is the other side of the singularity. The palette inverts across the threshold — warm gold outside, cold iridescent blue/violet within — and the work and writing actually live in here. You’re no longer watching the maw from a distance; you’re inside the thing you fell into, falling continuously inward through strata toward a comforting heart at the center.
The Sanctum — SPEC-00-1, within the horizon. The photon ring lensed cold around the dark heart; you crossed the lip.
The Maw
The hero
The thing you fall toward is a galaxy seen flat-on — really a black hole wearing an accretion disk. At its center is a hard black void: the event horizon, where nothing escapes and no particle crosses. Around it burns a thin, intensely bright gold-and-orange ring at the hole’s edge, dropping off fast and then grading to white and a faint cold tint as it spreads outward — brightest where the disk meets the dark, dimming into depth at the rim.
Four arms wind out of the core, evenly spaced and trailing against the spin, like streamers on a slowly turning fan, laid over a dense diffuse disc of roughly twenty thousand points. The whole field rotates slowly. Particles orbit and spiral inward — everything is falling toward the maw, drawn in and consumed as it reaches the black, then respawning out at the edge so the torrent never runs dry. The point is the falling-in: a galaxy caught in the act of being swallowed. The outer glow breathes, driven by a few incommensurate sine waves so the brightness swells and settles like something organic.
The Build
How it's made
The page is a single self-contained HTML file — no framework, no build step — published straight to GitHub Pages, with the whole maw drawn on one 2D canvas. As you scroll, that canvas is a fixed background that zooms: you’re falling toward the hole, the field darkens with depth, and a tunnel vignette closes in.
Over the top sits a persistent instrument frame: corner telemetry (state, depth, infall, warmth), scanlines, a right-side vertical nav, and self-drawing esoteric glyph markers that inscribe a leader line to a point in the field, hold, then vanish. Gold is the one saturated, warm thing in an otherwise cold machine — it follows attention.
The mark is the Whirl: a five-turn logarithmic spiral converging to a warm core — the maw distilled, so the logo, the hero, and the whole site are one gesture. It doubles as the favicon.
The Motion
The part you feel more than you see
Motion is a first-class material here, not decoration. A few signature beats:
- The breach — holding the maw winds the spin up, sweeps a feathered wavefront outward, piles the disk into a tightening, brightening ring, then plunges it through to black and fades into the interior.
- The naming event — inside the singularity, on a rare timer, a tag fires at a point on the photon ring: a self-inscribing leader line and a single emotion word in a vivid hue, seeding a soft swell that flows outward through the particle cloud. The instrument briefly names and feels something.
- The core — the destination at the bottom of the fall is the warm payoff: tiny affirmations that self-write and vanish, scattered in the dark heart, blue over gold. The cold descent resolves into something that feels like home.
Status
Shipped and live. v1 was the descent surface; v2 — the breach and the interior world — followed. Still plenty ahead: interior performance and a mobile pass, the writing pipeline, per-project case studies, maybe a custom domain. The instrument is still recording.
